Interesting. I just couldn't listen to that or bare to see that thing sittin around. Also would hate to see all the bubbles lol. Did you come up with the idea yourself, if so good job.
I have a lid on the can so real can't hear it. The bubbles go away very quickly. I didn't come up with the exact idea, this is just my spin on it.

After my Sea Pen found it's way to my powerhead ( it's still alive and holding on) the other night I decided to get rid of all powerheads in the tank and go with something more natural feeling for the corals.
Materials I used:
A) 2.5G trash can from Wally World
B) 3/8 i.d. tubing
C) 1/2 mpt to 3/8 barb
D) 1-1/4 sink drain line with screw on fittings/ 2-straight and 2-elbows
E) Aquarium Safe silicone
First I took a 1/2" hole saw and cut a hole in the side at the bottom for the 1/2mpt to thread into. Siliconed the inside and outside of the fitting. Next I drilled a 1-1/4 hole in the botom of the trash can and through the top of my canopy on the side I wanted the flow to come from. Put my straight pipe down through the trash can and canopy and siliconed the heck out of it. Added my elbow and down tube inside the trash can and adjust the height that I wanted the water to surge at and leave in the bottom of the can when finished. I cut the bottom elbow in the middle of the bend and placed on the end of the pipe at water level when the tank is full. I have two powerhead 402's pumping water to the surge box. They are located in one of the HOB filters I have, so no one else can be mangled by them.Only draw back to this setup is it does put bubbles in the display tank but they look good when thinking of an ocean surge coming in and the corals have really opened up and took notice of the natural flow they are receiving. Here is a short video and pictures of the surge box. It's not pretty but works for a $10 home DIY. I also found this is a great place to dump food and let the surge bring food in to the inhabitants and also I have my carbon in there so water passes through it. I left the water level in the bottom at about 4" so I can place some chaeto in there also.
