Oh okay, I was referring to the refugium. I don't really know what benefits of having anything down there really helps. I just wanted to get different opinions.

Dt. I once upon a time ran a dsb in my sump. Ive never ran a fuge. I would like to tho. To me , a dsb is aesthetically pleasing. I love watching the lil guys play in the sand (my yellow damsel LOVES digging out sections of the tank for some reason..) . My pistol shrimps are like bull dozers when it comes to their tunnels. The ywg of course is always sifting. I have alot of conchs that are always digging through the sand and i plan on having a 3''-4'' sandbed in my 210.

Josh are you talking about in your refugium or in your main display for your DSB?

ive always heard and read that majority of the beneficial bacteria actually live in the live rock. I run a DSB . NOT because of the possible bacterial benefits but because of the creatures i keep. My pistol shrimps need a sand bed deep enough to tunnel and whatnot..

lol im thinking that a refugiutm as far as biological filtration goes is useless unless your dt has little rock or is bare bottom. however it is a great place for nutrient export, such as growing caluerpa or some form of macro algae. and is also a great place to raise little critters that feed your fish and corals.

but this is just my opinion and as far as substrate goes put what you want sand mud or nothing probably wont ever know the difrence

So this is a highly debated topic. I know Hort has been wondering about this as well. I've researched this so much within the last couple weeks and there is no real definitive answer as to whats best. I would just like to know what our reef club members opinions on these three options within a refugium. I'm personally leaning more twords a bare bottom with LR. Not sure if this has been discussed in a dedicated topic yet, couldn't find anything. So yeah, opinions please!
