you could put a ball valve for the feed onto the right side

thanks for your advice! well i found a new tank that i will hopefully (praying) be picking up on monday.... it comes with a sump and everything! whoot!

Here is mine, I really like the way it worked. Maybe that will give you some ideas. Man look at all the salt creep.

I wouldn't have have the return pump pumping the right side. Seams like it would take away from the head height and not give you the flow you would want in the main tank. I guess it would really come down to how much flow you want. I had mine set up so that the overflow goes into the right and lift side and then baffle so that the return could be in the middle.
