Welcome to tcrc! We'll do all we can to help you learn. Posting from my phone atm but check out our chemistry section. I believe there are some links and posts in there that can help. Just remember that calc, alk, and ph are related in some form. Too high calc equals low alk and vice versa.

I reciently purchased everything I could get my hands on to start up a new 55 gal reef. Built a stand and canopy. 55 gal. overflow tank, 265w T5 reciently added 130w to that for 395w on main tank and 130w for the refugium under the stand. Digital Aquatics Elite controler with SL1 SL2 which monitors 2xPH, PPT, Temp, ORP. with a modual for float switches and all plug ins are controlable. I tried making my own sump but ended up buying one and it works alot better. Korallin calcium reactor. Chiller-heater and Protien skimmer on its way. I have had this for about 3 months and well its just really starting to take off although I do not understand all there is to know about balancing the PH,Calc,Alk and then trace minerals but I am stumbling through. I got 120lbs of Live rock and some sand for the botttom and mud and sand for the refugium. I have started with 4 chromies and since bought a goby, clown, 3 cleaner shrimp and some snails. I have about 6 or 7 soft coral varieties that seem to be doing ok so far.  I have a ton to learn and do things backwards or I just didnt think it would be so difficult to keep or learn. Like I said I am having a heck of a time getting PH,ALK,Calc in order. PH bottoms out in morning around 7.5 Last attempt to regulate this was with Kalkwasser but I can see that it will take to much of this to regulate it at 8.2 so I am going to look for alternative answers. Well, in a nutshell thats how it started one day 3 months ago and i cant stop till its right now. lol hope to pick some brains and share some more stories.  Mike
