thats a cool idea you could even make custom batched with higher trace elements to replenish the ones that have been depleted in your system

Ok , I ran into some trouble with a couple of things. I thought I had found everything but as it turns out I am having some trouble with the mag chloride and cal chloride. I thought I could pich up the stuff to use at Ace hardware in JC but it turns out I can't. If I order it online then I the amount of money saved by mixing it is going to go down because of shipping. If everything can be found then diy salt will save you money , finding everything is the challenge.

If it works ok, we'll be willing to throw in some, or even split the cost with someone.

How much will you mix initially?
If you're going to do a larger amount, I'd be willing to purshase $25 worth from you to help offset your starup cost.
I'm sure others might too.

Epsom salt aaron brand aprox 5.00 4 lb bag walmart
Qik Joe ice melt ( calcium chloride ) ace hardware 16.99 20 lb bag
morton salt potassium chloride water softener (potassium chloride) 26.99 40 lb home depot
Baking soda ( sodium bicarbonate ) cheap at walmart

Yes , I was going to try it and see how it goes . Thought about a small 10 gallon or something like that just to check it out . I found another guy online who was using something similar for his commercial sal****er minnow biz . Said that he actually lost less fish with the mix than what he lost with Instant Ocean.

This is real interesting, I've been looking at the Bulk Reef Supply site for ideas and was almost on this line of thinking, are you going to try a small test batch?

*IDEA* How bout doing a nano tank w/Damsels for a starter test tank,
then move into some easily kept corals.

It may be a while before I can do my inwall build, so I might be willing to do a small tank for test soon.

To make it smaller you would just multiply by your tank percentage as a decimal.

55 gallons - multiply each ingredient by .055
75 gallons - multiply each ingredient by .075
100 gallons - .100
150 gallons - .150
500 gallons - .500
etc. etc.

Was reading a thread on reef central and the guy building the tank used his own salt mix . So far he had 0 trouble . Here is his formula . It is based on 1000 gallons so keep that in mind

I used the recipe below for 1000 gallons.

95,920 grams - Sodium Chloride (Morton's High Purity Swimming Pool Salt - Could also use Water Softener Salt).

20,116 grams - Magnesium Chloride (Ice Melter)

15,668 grams - Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt)

4,560 grams - Calcium Chloride (Ice Melter, There are other sources)

2,796 grams - Potassium Chloride (Water Softener available at HD)

668 grams - Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

57.2 grams - Strontium (Kent Marine, etc.)

Kent Marine Essential Elements - As directed on bottle for your volume of water.

I think i am going to check into this because it has to save quite a bit of money for salt. Somebody chime in and tell me what they think .
