I love Tri clams. I have several. I read a lot about them before getting the ones that I have. Consistency is the key to clams. They do not like change. I think that the ones that i have lost were from my tanks inconsistency.
Most of what I have read about feeding said that Phyto is needed up to 3 inches. That was up until about 1 to 1.5 years ago. Several studies came out then saying that feeding was not necessary. Lots of light for the croceas and the maximas was all that was needed. For the croceas and the maximas, in a deep tank, you need MHs. By deep, I mean >24 inches. Less light is needed by the remaining clams. But all the clams except for maybe the croceas (max size about 5-6 inches) get a lot bigger than you plan for. So, plan big? HA!
Glad to see the folks in the tri-cities are getting organized. I think the club idea is a good thing for all reefers. individually we can come up with some real weird ideas. HA!
Come and visit us on our Reef Central forum or on the Reef2reef forum. Most of our activity is on RC these days.
In my 70 gallon, I have a Yellow Tang to help with Algae, a blue Mandarin and a Large Yellow Tail Blue Damsel as my "Token Fish". I've never been heavy into fishkeeping except for seahorses and Pipefish. This may change as I try to finish my Reef. I have several assorted Brittle Stars, several Large and XLarge Trocus snails, Hermits scattered here and there.
I have several frags of Table Acros, a Tricolor acro, Montipora Capricornis Mother colony and Frags, a cut up Blue ridge coral and frags, a large Rhodactis Mushroom (in my Wife's tank) and frags, a colt coral (Wife's tank), a large Table Acro that I got wild and epoxied onto a rock-now it has spread 3or4 inches on the rock and seems to be starting 2 new table formations (I share frags of this guy sometimes), I have a frag of a Acropora Hyacinthus (table acro) that I started a year ago from a tiny frag, it has formed a small table on the concrete plug and will soon spead out into the flow. I have a Pagoda cup that I bought at 3 inches and it's now about six inches. I have a plate coral that was a Nickel sized bud from a dead Mother skeleton, it's now about 3 1/2 inches. I'll be getting more stuff soon.

I loaned my camera a while back and now it's dead. Hopefully Slipper will come and take pics sometime soon.

This type of Clam does do better when it's older, (3inches plus) but still is a planktonic feeder as well as Photosynthetic. (The older and larger tanks produce their own Zooplankton and Phytoplankton steadily. Calcium needs to be up, 400 to 450, Mag as well needs to be up. The water conditions to keep these Clams is the same as very demanding Acroporas. (NO Kidding) Also, make sure the animal is in the rockwork and not in or close to sand to prevent predator cone snails from chewing his foot or hinge. *****Suggested reading: Reef Central, Tridacnid Clams and other Mollusks Forum. Read as much as you can and as far back as you can stand. *To answer your question, Live Phyto is needed. Where did you buy the Maxima?

I was reading it said that you don't have to feed them since its past 3 inches will kent phytoplankton work. I will try to get some good pictures of him.
Nice Maxima JT! You will need to feed him DT's Phytoplankton. Also, Small amounts of DT's Oyster Eggs. I'd think that Coral frenzy would make an OK supplement, but YOU HAVE TO HAVE PHYTO. You can get it at Marine Depot. You'll have to keep it cold in the fridge. Oyster eggs must be kept frozen.

Heres the clam heres the tank my goniopora was mad after i turned the light on and then back off. Sorry for the bad pictures water went every where when aclimating and i need to clean the glass off.
No they wouldn't do it i called they said no i got him for 44 dollars hes so funny anytime you come near the tank and kinda make a shadow he starts to close and open. Tarvis i have 45 watts of power compact 18w 50/50 came with the tank and a 26 watt daylight.
Hes four inches do i have to feed him or not. Hes attached to a rock thats huge how do i get him off. Dosing nano reef a and b every day will work for calcium and what ever else he needs.
I personally think we should have a clam fourm and bivavle fourm for people with questions i don't know where to post q's as i bought a teardrop maxima clam and have some questions.
