I know when i had plenty of sand sifting critters, my sand stayed pretty clean so i never really had to worry about vacuming the top layer off.

what is the feeling on vacuming the top layer of your sand bed for detridus and such or eveh that layer of red slime or algie that form theur sometimes

By the book a DSB is supposed to be around 6 inches deep.
Mine has worked at 4 inches, but I intend to deepen it over time.

deep sand beds seem to work for me i have pretty deep in my 30,2.5,12

I read lots of Pros and Cons on the subject and keep one.
I believe it has helped my system.

There have been many debates on deep sand beds.  For those of you not on Reef Central, you should join.  For those of you interested, check out this, and last months Reef Keeping Magazine Articles on natural filtration.
